Judy Leden tried to get the replica, built by volunteers from Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, airborne at RAF Woodvale in Formby, Merseyside.
But after a few tries, she had to give up as the engine simply did not have enough power to get the aircraft up. Health and safety rules meant it was built with man-made material seconite instead of paper, which made it stronger but heavier. A different propeller and strap for the pilot also added to the weight.
