The desperate struggle of new-born flamingos

Flamingos or flamingoes are gregarious wading birds in the genus Phoenicopterus and family Phoenicopteridae.
They are found in both the Western Hemisphere and in the Eastern Hemisphere, but are more numerous in the latter.
There are four species in the Americas and two species in the Old World. Two species, the Andean and the James’s Flamingo,
are often placed in the genus Phoenicoparrus instead of Phoenicopterus.

Disney’s first nature film captures the desperate struggle of new-born flamingos.
Six weeks into filming the latest big budget Disney movie, and the mood among the crew was tense. With no script to work from
and a cast of millions who were anything but obliging, the stakes were desperately high.
The location was Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, where three young film-makers had set out to make the first Disney nature epic in 40 years.
But their ‘cast’ the million and a half flamingos who flock there to breed were providing no action at all.
Wildlife film-maker Leander Ward recalls, ‘We needed action, but for six long weeks, while we sat for hours in temperatures of 40 degrees or more,
all the flamingos did was stand and feed on blue-green algae.
